Axia Home Loans in one minute

Axia Home Loans was a retail mortgage lender based in Bellevue, Washington. It was a registered trade name of Axia Financial, LLC (NMLS# 27830). It was founded in 2007 and was 100% employee-owned, which was rare for a lender of its size.

Its loan officers worked out of local branches and offered the usual mix of home loans: conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, reverse mortgages and down payment assistance programs. At the time of the Planet deal, Axia had branches in 17 states, mostly in the West, the Northwest and the Midwest.

Fun factAxia was owned by its own employees through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). When Planet announced the deal, it pointed to Axia’s strong customer service record as one reason it wanted the team.

What “bought certain assets” really means

This part confuses a lot of people. Planet did not say it took over every Axia loan. It said it acquired certain retail assets, which mostly means people, branches and the business of making new loans.

Your existing loan is a separate thing. Most mortgages are sold to investors soon after closing, and a servicer collects the payments. So the company you pay today may have nothing to do with Axia or Planet. The only reliable answer is on your own paperwork.

Myth“My lender closed, so my loan is cancelled.” No. A loan is a contract. If the company that made it closes or sells its business, you still owe the same amount on the same terms. The rate and payment do not change because of the sale.

How to check any lender or loan officer

Every mortgage company and loan officer in the U.S. must have an NMLS ID. You can look them up for free on NMLS Consumer Access. It shows:

  • Which company a loan officer works for right now
  • Which states they are licensed in
  • Whether a company’s license is active, and any public regulator actions
