When you purchase a home, it is important to have a team of people helping you every step of the way. In addition to a Loan Originator (we may know a few people), you should also hire a professional real estate agent when buying or even selling a home. Licensed real estate agents can help you make smart decisions and avoid mistakes.

When it comes to finding a real estate agent you can trust, there are a few tips to consider.

Ask friends and colleagues for referrals. Once you get a list of potential candidates, do some research. Look up websites and online profiles and customer reviews.

Choose a couple of agents to interview. You want to ask questions about experience and training, certifications, and their expectations on commission from the purchase of the home.

Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

    • How much experience do you have?
    • Is this the only real estate firm you’ve worked at?
    • How do you like to work?
    • How will you help me make competitive offers and negotiate with sellers?

Set realistic expectations and goals with your candidates. Let each know your price range and preferences of the home you want to purchase (This is why it is important to be pre-qualified by an experienced Loan Originator before you even start looking for a home).

And most importantly, don’t rush your decision. The real estate agent you decide to work with will be your ally during a very stressful time. Take your time and do as much research and legwork as you can to make sure the real estate agent you choose is right for you.
